Atreyu's parents were killed soon after he was born, when the Centurians fired on their vessel because of an unwitting incursion into a no-fly zone. But the damaged ship's life-support systems sustained him until the craft was discovered by a merchant ship. Its captain took the boy back to the small Sian colony he called home. And when they couldn't locate any of the child's kin, the colonists raised him as their own. So he grew up without a single mother or father, but instead had countless people watching over him and caring for him. Hence they called him Atreyu, which means "Son of All".
