Jeffery Mosser's parents had been firm opponents of the traditional 'blue for boys', 'pink for girls' dichotomy. Hence they painted their son's bedroom purple. When he subsequently turned into a purple cloud of gas, they went through a phase in which they felt partially responsible -- and redecorated the chamber with pictures of normal young boys in the hope that it might somehow reverse the transformation.
