The titles of "Ocean Master" and "Ocean Mistress" date back to the days when the Piscarians were a collection of pre-spaceflight civilizations. Due to their aquatic origins, it was akin to saying "Master / Mistress of the Universe" -- somewhat hyperbolic, but indicative of the great military power those individuals wielded. Though many of the species avoid using it today, considering it to be rather boastful and excessively grand, Synactha refuses to be called anything else. And given her impressive string of victories, in which she demonstrated both personal courage and tactical brilliance, the politicians to whom she answers are content to go along with it.
