Very little is known about The Abyss, save for what he's chosen to share with students during their training. If anyone else is even aware of his real name, they haven't revealed that information.
He was a counterintelligence agent, a shadowy figure who adopted and discarded identities by the dozen in the course of his operations. Through a combination of specialist training and natural instinct, the man who became The Abyss could 'read' people simply by watching them speak -- discerning truth from falsehood in an instant. Obfuscating witnesses and dissembling enemy agents broke before his interrogations, revealing everything they knew.
His powers only served to make him even more intimidating upon their emergence. He gained the ability to shroud himself in pure shadow, concealing everything save for his glowing eyes. And he can disable a person, render their minds incapable of any rational thought, simply by looking at them.
The Abyss' costume appears at first glance to be a simple cloak and hood. But in reality it's a manifestation of his powers. Its shape and hue change in accordance with his whims, a great aura of shifting shadows with the inscrutable professor at their nexus. No matter how voluminous or encumbering it might seem, it never interferes when The Abyss -- a master of all forms of close combat -- decides to use violence to subdue his enemies in lieu of his gaze.
His students at the Phaeton Project are called the acolytes, a term that remains uncapitalized at his insistence. They live and train in Perdition, a curious place which seems to have no fixed location -- and fills the rare visitors there with a tremendous feeling of disorientation. There they take part in their professor's secretive curriculum, mastering the arts of physical combat and psychological warfare, learning to use both their bodies and their enemies' terror as weapons. It's said they also dabble in the occult, harnessing supernatural forces beyond the understanding of the school's other inhabitants.
