In the old days of the sport, racers employed a variety of tricks and tactics which have since been ruled illegal. For example, one devised a way to have his runner leave force-fields in its wake -- rather than just trails of disorienting light. Hence he could swerve in front of his rivals, and cause their vehicles to smash against the energy barriers he created. The racer didn't take the outlawing of his technology, or his ban from the sport, well. In fact, during the next race he invaded the course on his Photon Runner and drove it straight across the track -- causing the deaths of every single competitor.
