Space is, as the name would suggest, spacious. Hence conventional mines aren't very practical. Unless you have enough to completely flood an area, any pilot who isn't an idiot will just fly around them. But these ones have advanced systems that home in on enemy vessels -- thus providing those smug fellows with a nasty or amusing surprise, depending on one's point of view.
