Obtained through participation in events. Normal 1-ticket events will award 5 coins for 1st, 3 for 2nd or 3rd, and 1 for 4th. Legendary events award twice as many. Drafts also award 1 coin for 4th place. Sometimes special events (e.g. the Riftwalker Draft Brawl) will also award Hero Coins.
