Experiments always give the player an item on the first craft. Future crafts may yield stats or consumables if the item is unique, or more copies of the initial item.  Collection crafts only produce stat points.
The Lab contains experiments and collections that players may complete to gain items and stat points.
 
Experiments give the player an item, while collections are just for stat points.  After an experiment has been completed it can be completed again for stat points.
