The detective was apparently skilled in a range of martial arts, including fencing, stick-fighting, boxing, and baritsu -- "the Japanese system of wrestling". You wonder why he didn't simply use these combative abilities to beat confessions out of the criminals he encountered, rather than spending so much time searching for clues.
