They were no doubt asking themselves that same question when one of the ships was boarded, and the Emergents proceeded to batter, incinerate, or psychically torment its crew and passengers. The officer in charge of the expedition force knew at once that his mission had failed. If the humans had such amazing powers, attempting to conquer their planet would be a risky proposition. So he ordered a withdrawal, and left in search of softer targets. As for mankind, the thrill of first contact made them gaze up at the stars as never before. There were aliens out there. And humanity needed to take its place among them.
