|text=It could be worse, he mused, as he waited in the cramped cylindrical space. Possibly not much worse. But worse. The military judges hadn't sentenced him to death, which was all to the good. They'd even given him a chance to earn his freedom and an honorable discharge. Discharge... He laughed, because it was better than crying.

An immense thud shook the compartment, lurching him this way and that, banging him against the walls. The weapon was about to fire. Then only his energy field would (might...) save him from being splattered on the enemy's hull like an insect on a windshield.

"Worst boarding method ever," he said under his breath.

A second later he was flying through the laser-sliced void.
