The scene inside told the other half of the tale: a man's butchered body on the floor, and the Grim Reaper standing above it like a dark, avenging angel. For a long moment they stared at one another. A myriad possible outcomes hung in the air between them, Kell's death and the Reaper's balanced on ten thousand scales. Perhaps his first shot would pierce her mask and brain. Maybe her scythe would cleave through his spine. But all those destinies dissipated when the world exploded.
