|text=7. "The sheriff took it hard. Spent that night drinking himself full of rotgut. But he didn't take it near as hard as Bartholomew DeAngelo. Soon as he heard what'd happened to his boy he grabbed himself a gun and a rope, rounded up some of his men, and drove into town.

"They stood out in the street and called for the sheriff. Said they'd burn the whole place down if he didn't show. So Gulch went outside, drunk and stumbling as he was. He told Bart he was mighty sorry about what went down -- that Rodney hadn't given him much choice in the matter. Bart shot him. Then his boys tied a rope around the body and dragged it away behind their vehicle to show everyone what happened to folk who messed with a DeAngelo.

"No one knew where they dumped Gulch's corpse, so there was an empty coffin at his funeral. The preacher was still speaking fine words over it when I came back."
