As a kid, he dreamed of being a costumed hero known as The Crimson Mask. Not because he cared about justice, virtue, and helping his fellow man, but out of pure narcissism. He wanted attention, for everyone to watch him and gasp with amazement at his superiority. When his superhuman strength manifested itself, and he earned a scholarship to the Phaeton Project, he thought he'd made it. His dreams were about to come true! He'd be catapulted onto the road to superstardom!<br />
<br />
So he celebrated with a massive drinking binge. It was during that night of blurry inebriation that he had the bright idea of getting his mask permanently tattooed on his face. This is what led to a local newspaper dubbing him 'The Crimson Mark' on its front page, after McCabe woke up the next morning to find that he'd wrecked half a city block.<br />

He was carted off to jail. And to make matters worse, his publicized drunken rampage and idiotic decision to make his costume a permanent addition to his body prevented him from ever having a secret identity. As a consequence, he lost his place at the Phaeton Project.<br />
<br />
But Valeria Solano bailed him out, and offered him a place in the Emergent Fighting League. She saw potential in The Crimson Mark, and didn't want him to end up as another superpowered criminal.
