Hence when she arrived at the tower block to discover that the elevators were both closed due to vandalism, and thus had to traverse all those flights of stairs on aching legs, she was muttering words which belonged more to a gangbanger than a doctor of English literature.

Her mood wasn't improved by the hologram she found projecting from her doorknob. It informed her that she was behind on her rent, which seemed rather superfluous -- since she already knew she hadn't paid it. All in all, the day's trials and tribulations put her in the mood for drink. That was her plan when she pushed the door open. But then she saw the slip of paper lying on the threadbare carpet.

'ELVES!' it proclaimed. 'Are you sick of Santas?'
