I began to trudge through the rain across the land of miserable stone.

I do not remember what thoughts possessed me, or what drove me. I do know I didn't want to die.

I don't know how long I walked, or how often I fell. I do know that there were times I almost let myself lay and drown on the rock.

On the last of these sprawls in the rain, splayed out and defeated, I let the rain erode my will. The pain and the cold began to fade, and I remember thinking that perhaps my existence was meant for that brief painful slog, and that perhaps I was not doing myself any disservice by closing my eyes and waiting to fade back out the way I came in.

I thought that perhaps this was the way all lives went.

It was at this time that I saw the light, dancing out in the dark.
