If there was anything before the storm, I did not know what. To this day, I still don't, and it hardly matters anyway. Everything of any consequence began with the storm.

It was dark, and the rain pervaded everything. I was a tattered man, in those first memories. Soaked through, and cold. My clothing and my flesh both showed the scrape and tear of hard use, and a deep dull ache all slathered over with a sharp electric pain that told me that the rain was certainly washing away blood.

There were flashes of lightning, catastrophic hellbolts that lit up all the world only just long enough to convey the hostile menace of a land that had seen no guiding hand. No careful cultivation. Jagged stone, spires of bitter rock. This was a land just born.

In those brief flashes, I knew I was in a place that had never yet been called "home" by anything that knew the word.
